Grief Choir by the Sea

What is it?

Grief Choir by the Sea is a fortnightly gathering on Hove Beach to remember and make space for loss.

There is no expectation, or requirement to sing. It's just me by the shoreline with an acoustic instrument, sharing songs and creating an accessible space for the things that I've learn't matter so much to people but and are often avoided or forgotten due to their weight.

My work shows me time and again just how much grief people carry quietly and alone. The death of someone loved. The end of a relationship. A life we imagined but never had. A version of ourselves left behind. The lists are long.

The issue is that when grief is unexpressed, it festers inside of us. Later emerging emerging as anxiety, numbness, irritability, exhaustion, disconnection, or a lingering sense that something isn't quite right. The parts of our story that remain unspoken often find other ways of making themselves known - often unhelpfully.

These gatherings offer a simple alternative.

For around an hour, we make space for what is often left unfelt or unsaid, honouring the losses that continue to shape our lives through music, reflection, and community.

You're welcome whether your grief is recent, decades old, or simply difficult to carry alone.

Who is it for?

Anyone carrying loss.

You don't need to share your story.

You don't need to explain your grief.

You don't need to sing.

Some people join in. Others sit quietly and listen to the sound of voices carried by the wind and sea. Everyone is welcome.

How does it work?

We gather on the shingle on Hove Beach between Babble and Rockwater at 7pm every other Wednesday.

We share a selection of simple songs, with moments of silence, reflection, and listening to the sea. It usually lasts around an hour, sometimes longer.

There is no pressure to participate in any particular way. You're free to sing, listen, reflect, cry, smile, remember, or simply be present—within the group or from a distance that feels comfortable for you.

Cost

Attendance is completely free.

If you'd like to support this work, voluntary donations are welcome. They help fund accessible therapeutic services through The Unsaid Space.

Whether you donate or not, you are equally welcome.

Something Worth Remembering

Grief is not a problem to be solved.

It is a natural response to losing someone or something we have loved, valued, or hoped for. It exists because something mattered.

Many of us learn to carry grief quietly. We stay busy. We move on. We tell ourselves we're fine. Yet what we push aside rarely disappears.

Making space for it is one of the healthiest things we can do. When we allow ourselves to remember, feel, and share our losses with others, something begins to soften. We reconnect not only with our sadness, but also with our love, gratitude, meaning, and humanity.

Grief doesn't go away.

But it can become lighter to carry when its shared openly.

These gatherings offer an opportunity to do so, to pause, remember, and give attention to something that may have been waiting quietly in the background for too long. And perhaps most importantly, to discover that grief is not something we were ever meant to carry alone.

When it is shared, witnessed, and held in community, it can become a little lighter.
